Baseball season swings into action at Carnarvon

Baseball season officially returns to Oak Bay this weekend with Carnarvon Baseball hosting its opening ceremonies Sunday

Baseball season officially returns to Oak Bay this weekend with Carnarvon Baseball hosting its opening ceremonies Sunday, April 12 at 11 a.m. at Carnarvon Park. Across town, Beacon Hill Little League opens its 2015 season with ceremonies beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hollywood Park.

The Victoria Eagles Baseball Club, whose two Bantam AAA teams are hosted at Oak Bay’s Carnarvon Park, opens its regular season Saturday at nearby Lambrick Park, host to the Premier, Junior Premier and Midget AAA Eagles teams. Following 10:30 a.m. opening ceremonies – including a first pitch by former MLB pitcher Steve Sinclair and a bullpen bench dedication in the memory of longtime pitching coach Roy Moretti – the Premier Eagles will open their season at 11:30 a.m. against the Nanaimo Pirates. On Sunday, the Eagles host the Parksville Royals with play starting at noon.

The Victoria Mariners open their regular season next weekend, with the Premier team hosting the Nanaimo Pirates at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 18 at Henderson Park before heading north to Parksville Sunday, April 19.

High school senior badminton action heats up Tuesday, April 14, when Glenlyon Norfolk School travels to Spectrum Community School. On Thursday, April 16, GNS travels to Stelly’s and Oak Bay hosts St. Michaels University School. All games start at 3:45 p.m.

On the high school rugby pitch, the senior girls are the only ones playing this week, with Spectrum hosting three teams April 17 starting at 3 p.m. Reynolds will also host three teams, and Mt. Douglas four.

Local basketball  players take note: the Camosun College Chargers Basketball Program is hosting its annual Player ID Camps to identify prospects for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. The  men’s camp is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 10 and 11, while the women’s camp is the following weekend, April 17 and 18.
