Basketball is back at UVic

Vikes and high school teams both hit the hardwood this week

With the 2015 winter break in the history books, local athletes are back at it.

The men’s and women’s University of Victoria Vikes host the University of Alberta Bisons on Friday, Jan. 8 and Saturday, Jan. 9 at the CARSA gym. The women open play Friday at 6 p.m. with the men’s game following at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the women tip off at 5 p.m. with the men at 7 p.m.

On the high school courts, Oak Bay senior AAA girls’ basketball hosts Belmont  Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 4:15 p.m. in the new Gary Taylor Gym.

The Oak Bay Tier 1 boys play later that day when they visit Lambrick Park secondary for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

Castaway Wanderers Rugby club members  hold the last of this year’s tree chipping fundraisers this weekend. On Saturday, Jan. 9 and Sunday, Jan. 10 bring your tree to Currie Road next to the Windsor Park Rose Garden from 10 a.m. to 4 a.m.

In Lower Island Women’s Soccer Association action, the Division 2 Bays FC play the Gorge FC at 12 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10 at Hampton turf. In Division 3, Castaways United play Prospect Lake 2 tonight (Friday, Jan. 8) at Finlayson turf at 8 p.m.

Supporting men’s soccer, the Division 1 Bays United 1 team plays Vic West FC 1 at UVic at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15. In Division 3B, Bays United FC plays Gorge at Lochside Field on Friday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.

Local field hockey players are also back on the turf this weekend.

Vancouver Island Men’s Field hockey continues on Sunday, Jan. 10, when the Rebels 1 play the Tigers at 11 a.m., the Marauders play the Mutineers at 12:30 p.m., and the Rebels 2 play Oak Bay at 2 p.m. All games take place on UVic Field 1.

It’s a busy calendar for women’s field hockey. Starting Saturday, Jan. 9, Lynx 2 play the Blue Jays at 9:30 a.m., the Flickers play the Mariners 11 a.m., the Cardinals play the Sailors at 12:30 p.m., the Devils play the Demons at 2 p.m., the Renegades play the Ravens at 3:30 p.m., and Lynx 3 play the Pirates at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Jan. 10 the Patriots play Lynx 1 at 9:30 a.m. while later in the day, Lynx 2 play the Sailors at 6:30 p.m.

In Junior B ice hockey action, the Victoria Cougars come off of an action-packed week with just one game on this week’s calendar. The Cougars host the Westshore Wolves on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. at Archie Browning Arena.
