University of Victoria Vikes basketball fans can get a first glimpse of the 2015-16 men’s and women’s rosters playing in their new home, the Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities Performance Gym. The UVic women’s soccer team hits the pitch Friday, Oct. 2, facing the University of Saskatchewan at Centennial Stadium at 5 p.m. The women’s second home game is on Saturday, Oct. 3 against the University of Regina, before hitting the road Friday, Oct. 9 to take on the University of B.C.
The UVic men’s rugby squad hosts the Castaway Wanderers on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Wallace Field, beginning at 2:45 p.m. The women’s team hosts UBC at Wallace field, beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4.
Head to the UVic field hockey turf on Sunday, Oct. 4 when the Vikes men take on the West Coast Kings at 12:30 p.m.
It’s also a busy week in high school field hockey. Starting Monday, Oct. 5 at UVic, St. Margaret’s takes on St. Michaels University School and Glenlyon Norfolk faces Reynolds. Both games start at 3:30 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., SMUS faces Mt. Doug and Oak Bay takes on Lambrick Park. On Wednesday, Oct. 7, GNS hosts Oak Bay and Lambrick faces SMUS at 3:30 p.m., before Oak Bay faces St. Margaret’s at 4 p.m.
Senior boys’ soccer kicks off Thursday, Oct. 8. In Tier 1, GNS travels to the West Shore to face Royal Bay at 3:45 p.m., SMUS visits Claremont at Lochside Park at 3:30 p.m. and Oak Bay visits Reynolds at Braefoot Park at 3:30 p.m. In Tier 2, SMUS visits Parkland at 3:45 p.m.
Oak Bay runners take to the cross country trails with others from across the region Wednesday, Oct. 7 at Beaver Lake. The Grade 6 girls and boys start at 3:30 p.m., followed by Grade 7s at 3:45 p.m., Grade 8s at 4 p.m., Grade 9 to 12 girls and Grade 9 boys at 4:15 p.m., and Grade 10 to 12 boys at 4:30 p.m.
Oct. 6 brings senior girls’ volleyball to SMUS, which hosts Oak Bay and Spectrum beginning at 5 p.m.
In the seniors boys’ volleyball, Wednesday, Oct. 7, Oak Bay visits hosts Mt. Doug, along with Spectrum and Reynolds. First games start at 6 p.m.
In hockey action, the Victoria Cougars visit the Westshore Wolves at the Q Centre Wednesday, Oct. 7 when where the puck drops at 7 p.m. Returning home, Thursday, Oct. 8, the Cougs host the Saanich Braves at Archie Browning Arena beginning at 7 p.m. Follow the Cougars to the Saanich Peninsula Friday when they take on the Panthers at Panorama Arena at 7:30 p.m.
On the baseball diamond, Oak Bay’s Premier Mariners play the Langley Blaze at 1 p.m. at Layritz, Oct. 3.
