It’s a different year, but the same teams qualified for the Master’s division title once again as Hydaburg and Old Massett clashed on Saturday afternoon in a matchup of two titans.
Old Massett made its fourth straight appearance in the final, winning the first two and losing the last two as the Hydaburg team won the game 87-76 for its second straight championship.
It was a fast-paced game from start to finish, with quick passes and an influx of scoring by two experienced teams.
“I’m excited that we won,” Sid Edenshaw said. “We ran hard. It’s a big court, bigger than up there but when you battle Big Abe (Brown) and big guys like Trevor (Russ), that’s a lot of beef going against each other.”
Despite Hydaburg taking a 10-point lead after one quarter, no lead was safe because of strong offences on both sides. Both teams boasted great scorers, and they all showed up for this one.
Devin Edenshaw, last year’s MVP, was all over the court, throwing up shots and putting up blocks. He scored 22 points with five three’s in the game. But he wasn’t alone — TJ Young scored 25 for Hydaburg, and Anthony Lindoff scored 17.
Old Massett wasn’t slouching either. Stan Swanson and two-time MVP Brown each scored 15, while Trevor Russ had 14 and Tyler Bellis dropped 12 points.
Hydaburg held a comfortable lead into the fourth quarter in a spirited, physical match between the familiar rivals but in the end, the Alaskan team put it away on the back of strong shooting from Devin Edenshaw.
“We had a few extra turnovers and of course, a few shots weren’t dropping but once a few shots dropped, then we ran the ball,” Sid Edenshaw said.
Hydaburg’s Joe Young was named MVP of the Master’s division. He scored 11 points in the game.
