Bayside Racquets Club makes comeback

Raquette sports have begun to make a comeback in Oceanside

The game of squash has been quietly making a comeback in these parts, and to that end, organizers have resurrected the Bayside Racquets Club Championship.

Slated for Quality Resort Bayside in Parksville April 13-14, the tournament field is full at 24 players, and BRC executive member and tournament organizer Nathan Chadwick says the club is looking forward to hosting its first tournament in some time.

“It’s been a while,” said Chadwick, 25, and an avid player going on five years, adding, “it’s a great game, and we’re trying to build a stronger community base and get the word out about our club.”

The tournament is divided into three divisions — the A division is all men, and B and C are mixed.

Chadwick said he expects a lot of good matches with some strong local players vying for squash glory, pointing to Ron Butchko as one to watch in the A division and up and comer Kyle Campbell, 16, in the B Division.

The tournament runs Friday from 5-10 p.m. and Saturday from  9 a.m. – 5 p.m. with the finals starting at 3:30  p.m.

There is no admission; “it’s free to watch,” said Chadwick, “and the Upper Deck pub overlooks the courts, so you can have a bevy and watch.”
