The Cranbrook Curling Centre is a hub of activity this week as they host the 2017 BC Masters Curling Championship for both men and women.
The Masters category includes teams of athletes age 60 years and over, and this year’s men tournament includes a team from Cranbrook.
Led by skip Gerry Kent, the team includes third Ken McHargue, second Dennis Rounsville, and lead Peter Sweetman. It is the rink’s fourth straight appearance at the Master’s Provincial bonspiel.
The event kicked off on Tuesday night with the Kent rink defeating New Westminster’s Pughe rink 5-3 before losing to Chilliwack’s Watson rink 4-2. The team got back on track on Wednesday morning with a 6-5 win over Kelowna’s Koffski rink.
Kent will play Tsawwassen Rafter rink later today before facing Trail’s Beaudry rink and Esquimalt’s Walker rink on Thursday. The team will finish off the round robin portion of the bonspiel against Sparwood’s McKie rink on Friday.
The Watson rink is currently in first place in the men’s tournament with a 3-0 record, while the Chilliwack/Cloverdale/Richmond Klebe rink and Marpole’s Mick rink lead the women’s side with 2-0 records.
The winning team will represent BC at this year’s Canadian Masters Curling Championship, which will be held at the Guelph Curling Club in Ontario from April 3 to 9.
