BCCAA: Abbotsford teams burned by UBC-O Heat

The UBC-Okanagan athletic department had a huge weekend at the expense of Abbotsford’s B.C. Colleges Athletic Association (BCCAA) squads.

The UBC-O Heat scorched the Columbia Bible College Bearcats and University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, winning a total of eight games in two sports against the local programs.

In Kelowna, UBC-O’s juggernaut volleyball teams took it to their Abbotsford counterparts. The Bearcats visited on Friday evening, and the women suffered a straight-sets defeat to the defending national champion Heat, while the men fell in four sets to a UBC-O team that is currently ranked No. 1 in the country.

The Bearcats men, ranked No. 10 nationally coming in, gave the Heat a run for their money, winning the first set 25-20. But UBC-O bounced back to win the next three by scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-17.

“We showed we can physically play against a top-ranked team,” CBC head coach Rocky Olfert said.

“But we’re still hurting ourselves with our unforced errors, and that’s where you have to credit the Heat. They picked up their play after that first set, and we didn’t respond to that.”

The UFV volleyballers made the trip to Kelowna on Saturday, and both the men (25-14, 25-21, 25-18) and the women (25-17, 25-14, 25-20) suffered straight-sets defeats to the Heat.

The UBC-O basketball teams were in Abbotsford to face the Bearcats at Columbia Place, and they swept all four games.

The CBC men lost 73-34 on Friday and 92-58 on Saturday, while the women fell by scores of 94-64 and 112-39.

• The Bearcats hoopsters are at home this week against the Vancouver Island University Mariners on Friday (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m.) and Saturday (women 1 p.m., men 3 p.m.).
