If his team played up to its potential, Mike Godwin had a pretty good idea the Mt. Boucherie Bears would find their way into the 2014 post-season.
The Bears secured a playoff berth Friday night at the Apple Bowl with a 42-7 victory over the rival Rutland Voodoos in B.C. high school football action.
Boucherie (3-2) can finish no worse than sixth in the Eastern Conference, and potentially as high as third place.
“We expected to get in, now the games we have left w’re battling for seeding,” said Bears coach Mike Godwin. “If we can get third place and a home game, that would be nice.”
Against Rutland, the Bear fell behind early as Cory McCoy scored an early major for a 7-0 Voodoos lead.
But it was pretty much all Boucherie after that as the Bears’ running game overwhelmed the Rutland defense.
Zac Callaghan rushed for 132 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns. Fellow running backs Ty Truong and Aiden McLeod also scored along the ground, as did quarterbacks Dawson Bergevin and Tyler Toic.
“We have four solid running backs and really we just wore them (Rutland defense) down,” said Godwin.
Voodoos coach Peter McCall: “We scored first and played a tough for the first half, but ran into injury and fatigue in the second half and had too many miscues.”
Mt. Boucherie has two games remaining in the regular season—this Friday, 6:30 p.m. at the Apple Bowl against Lord Tweedsmuir, followed by Friday, Oct. 31 against KSS on the CNC turf.
The Voodoos (0-4) will host No. 1 Terry Fox (5-0) on Saturday, 1:30 p.m. at RSS.
Owls vs St. Thomas More
The high-powered St. Thomas More Collegiate Knights were too much for the KSS Owls en route to a 49-6 victory Friday at the Apple Bowl.
The Knights (4-1) built up a 42-0 lead through three quarters, before Parker Simson put the Owls on the board with a one-yard TD run for Kelowna’s only points.
At 2-2, KSS remains in playoff contention with three games left in the regular season. Six of eight teams in the Eastern Conference will make the playoffs.
The Owls will host Centennial on Friday, 4 p.m at the Apple Bowl.
