Belmont juniors win home tourney

Junior boys ‘B’ team pulls off a weekend upset in Langford tourney

Belmont secondary’s junior boys ‘B’ team surprised many, including their coach, on their way to a home tournament win over the weekend.

The boys triumphed in a semifinal contest with a tough Vic High squad before bettering St. Michaels University School in the final. With many believing Vic High had a significant edge over the hosts in the semis, the Bulldogs came out strong on their way to a 56-42 win.

“We jumped at them right away. We had a great first quarter … it was unexpected,” said head coach Aaron Williams.

The ‘Dogs were up against familiar foes in the finals with SMU, having fallen twice to them already this season. Williams’s club had an excellent warm up and took their opponents by surprise.

“I told the boys that this was our time, our day,” he said.

The game went to overtime, with the Bulldogs squeaking out a win by a handful of points. Joey Reaume was named the tournament’s MVP.

The ‘B’ Bulldogs will have several league matches before the South Island playoffs begin in February.
