Bike race debuts

First ever ValleyCross race occurs at Mill Lake Park on Sunday

The first-ever ValleyCross cyclocross bike race takes over Mill Lake Park on Sunday for racers of all levels and ages on a new course.

Features include paved and wooded sections, a stair run-up, barriers and a sand section. The 2.4-kilometre course sees competitors race nearly the full length of the park, starting and finishing near the parking lot off Emerson street.

Registration on the day of the race opens at 9 a.m., with the course open for practice runs at 10 a.m. Beginner riders hit the course at 10:30 a.m., followed by elite racers at 11:30 a.m., a free kids’ race at 12:45 p.m. and intermediate racers at 1:15 p.m.

There are no restrictions for bike or tire size in the beginner and intermediate divisions, and both mountain bikes and FAT bikes are welcome. Elite riders are subject to UCI rules when it comes to bikes and tire size.

The event is also offering a women’s learn-to-cross clinic at Mill Lake Park on Saturday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Pro rider Sandra Walter leads the clinic and it is open to women of all abilities.
