Black Bettys win tournament

The Grand Forks Black Bettys women’s hockey team won their last tournament of the year.

The Grand Forks Black Bettys (in dark uniforms) won the Checkers Vernon Tournament on May 12 with a thrilling win over Kamloops (light) in the final.

The Grand Forks Black Bettys women’s hockey team won their last tournament of the year in Vernon with a thrilling 2-1 overtime win over Kamloops in the final.

The tournament was in on the May 12 weekend and featured teams from throughout the Kootenays and Okanagan.

The Bettys, which are sponsored by Station Pub, consist of mostly Grand Forks players although they picked up a few players along the way from Midway, Rossland, Kelowna and Penticton to beef up their roster for the tournament.

“It was a great way to end the season,” said Angelina McIver, player for the Bettys. “Big praise to our goalie Teara Blatkewicz, who played amazingly.”

McIver also praised player/coach Katie Sparks who was unable to make the tournament but has been a real inspiration for the team.

Bettys’ players from Grand Forks are: Angelina McIver, Teara Blatkewicz, Rebecca Sneddon, Christine Venus, Amanda Brown and Crystal McKinnon. Also playing for the Bettys in the tournament was Heather Hollingsworth from Midway.
