The Breakers charged out to an early lead, but the Nanaimo Black Ice slipped past the host Comox Valley 5-4 in women’s hockey action Saturday at Glacier Gardens in Comox.

With two goals scored in the first period, the Breakers entered the second period feeling charged on their home ice. Defender Ashley Lauzon rushed the net to pick up the rebound left by #88, Stef Hart, for the first goal of the game. This was followed quickly by an unassisted goal by Devon Gillard.

Nanaimo’s offence came out strong, playing most of the second in the Breakers end. Tricia Webber scored the first goal for the Black Ice with a tip past goaltender Lesia Wick. Gillard responded with her second goal of the game with a pinpoint pass from Lauzon, but the Breakers were unable to hold onto the 3-1 lead.

Playing with the puck deep in the Breakers end, Sarah Dion managed to find the back of the net, laying the ground work for Webber to tie it up. Stick handling like a pro, she danced her way to the net and placed a beautiful shot over Wick’s shoulder. With their new found momentum, the Black Ice managed to secure two more goals by Steph Edwards and Anita Jezowski, leaving the Breakers battling to regain control. With only minutes remaining in the second, Gillard capitalized on a rebound, scoring a hat trick.

The third period remained goal-less with both goaltenders defending their nets as the teams left it all on the ice. Without another goal for the Breakers to tie it up, Nanaimo took home victory after a great game played by both teams.
