Zac Milne scored twice as the Vernon Black Widows grounded the Kelowna Huskies 6-1 in Okanagan Mainline Hockey Association Novice play Saturday at Wesbild Centre.
Austin Roest, who normally skates up front, was stellar on the back end as the Black Widows improved to 6-2-1.
“The team was a little overwhelmed playing at the Wesbild Centre and a couple kids had ‘powder legs’ from skiing Silver Star,” said head coach Tim Milne.
“It was great to get the win but we’re focused more on process with these guys. Skating hard, playing positions and passing the puck are key to their improvement.”
D-man JJ Milne, John Spraggs and Deagan MacMillan added singles for the Widows, who got dynamite play from d-men Riley Cormier and Brydon Pilon and forwards Brayden Schmiegelt, Tyler Burke, Zack Casagrande, Nolan Thomas and Erik Pastro. Logan Killingbeck just missed out on recording his first shutout.
Next action for the Black Widows is the Vernon Timbits Challenge Christmas Classic, Dec. 28-30.
Hawks soar past Knights
Sean Connors bagged a deuce as the Talon Benefits Hawks iced the North Okanagan Knights 6-1 Sunday in the consolation final of the Winfield Midget Rec Tournament.
Adam Fenske, game MVP Landon Ehnes, Braden Gilowski and Chase Larsen added singles.
The Hawks bowed 6-5 in overtime to the Grand Forks Bruins in a Sunday morning semifinal.
Troy Frith netted the winner with 58 seconds left in OT. The Hawks got two snipes from Fenske and singles from Larsen, Landon Munk and Connors (MVP).
The Talon crew outlasted the Westside Raiders 7-5 Saturday afternoon with Fenske pulling the hat trick and Larsen earning MVP with great play on defence.
Tylor McMillan scored and took MVP as the Hawks were ambushed 8-1 by the Kelowna Kings Saturday night.
Blazers torch Ducks
The Authentic Plaques and Trophies Blazers bounced the Vernon Seed Orchard Ducks 9-6 in Midget Super League action.
Cole Adams exploded for 3+2 to spark the Blazers, opening the attack with a pinball howitzer off the back glass and crossbar before rolling in off the goalie’s back.
Mitchell Cousins produced two goals, one on a beautiful coast-to-coast rush, similar to those his towering dad, Steve, pulled in his glory University of Alberta Golden Bears’ days. Dustin Schmore added 2+2, while a beautiful feed from Mackenzie Wilton sent Brock Wagner (1+2) in on a classic solo dangle through traffic. D-man Richard Thompson enjoyed a stellar two-way night.
Hustler Logan Revell added one goal with his true grit and determination, while veteran Yanik Fillion-Murphy potted 2+1.
Great decisions and support came from d-man Connor Smidt in front of solid call-up Bantam goalie Rowan Wood.
North Okanagan nets draw
Derrian Kobewka’s second goal of the game, a powerplay marker at 15:52 of the third period, gave the North Okanagan Knights a come-from-behind 3-3 draw with the Vernon Stevenson Mechanical Blues in Pee Wee Super League action Saturday at the Nor-Val Sports Centre.
Kobewka’s equalizer, on a wrist shot from the slot, beat Blues’ goalie Sam Knox five-hole, and came on the Knights’ sixth powerplay in the final 30 minutes – and 10th overall – as Knox faced a constant stream of North Okanagan shots.
Warin Buzzell had the other goal for North Okanagan, who trailed 2-0 after 40 minutes.
Braydie Allan-Webber had all three goals for the Blues. Dylan Blazek played the first half in goal for the Blues, his first action in two weeks, and held the Knights scoreless by making numerous key saves.
Nathanael Dubland and Denver Trumbley split the goaltending for North Okanagan, with Trumbley, in particular, recording a handful of game-saving stops.
Flames tame Predators
First star Jacob Brewer supplied 2+2 as the Bannister GM Flames torched the host Sicamous Predators 9-2 Sunday morning.
Nick Mitchell also collected 2+2 for the 7-3 Flames, while Chase Batchelor (2), Brooke Berube, Reece Hawthorne and Carter Morris completed the offence in front of Sam White.
The Flames’ Girl Power line of Berube, Alyssa Racine and Carly Southam dominated most of their shifts. D-man Jonas Ramsey had two helpers.
Stars sink Salmon Arm
The Lumby Pee Wee Stars, sponsored by Terry’s Automotive and Kineshanko Logging, stormed Salmon Arm Askew’s Foods 10-1 Saturday.
Tage Kineshanko erupted with 3+2, while Josh Litven (2), Morgan Holland, Trayton Phillips, Quin Williamson, Emily Romailler and Jordan Romailler also scored. Stars of the game were Emily Romailler, Kineshanko and d-man Vanessa Yaremcio.
Truck crew rolls win
In Bantam Super League play, Graham Moss netted two goals as the DCT Chambers Coyotes edged the Knights 6-5 Saturday in Enderby. Parker Wadsworth, Dex Elders, Cole Martin and Adam Sacht fired singles.
D-man Tyler Yule rung up two goals as the Five Star Awards Bulldogs stopped the Corbett Office Supplies Spartans 6-2 Sunday at PV.
Brennan Seltzer (1+2), Pee Wee call-up Cody Webb, Seth Blundell and blueliner Tylee Cooper also scored for the Dawgs, who got three assists from Mac Gourdine. Lucas Williams, Nic Poirier, Jessica Chillihitzia and Nick Demetrick hustled all game.
Nick Mann and Evan Winther replied for the Spartans.
