Blast Off: New year is the time for new resolutions

It’s the beginning of a new year and most people see this as a chance to make a fresh start.

It’s the beginning of a new year and most people see this as a chance to make a fresh start.

Whether it’s getting into better shape, changing your eating habits once and for all, or committing to starting your first steps towards a healthier you, chances are you’ve thought about creating a New Year’s Resolution for yourself.

If this is the case, you likely have the best intentions of staying on track for the duration of the year, but this can become difficult as the months progress. Why not try a different approach this year?

Instead of creating one or two main goals to accomplish over 365 days, try creating several smaller month-to-month goals. For example, for the month of January, setting a goal such as completing 20 workouts this month is a manageable objective.

Since the goal is much smaller and specific, you will be more likely to succeed because it is easier to attain.

Also, since the deadline is much sooner, the task may seem less daunting.

Whenever we start with new clients, we like to have them create one or two S.M.A.R.T goals. This technique allows them to see exactly what it is they would like to accomplish, and basically, the more specific the goals are that htey create for themselves the greater chances they have of fulfilling them.

S.M.A.R.T is an acronym which stands for:

Specific — Instead of saying “I’d like to lose weight”, give a specific number such as “I’d like to lose 10 pounds”.

Measurable — Is there a way for you to measure your progress? In the instance of weight-loss, for example, you could weigh yourself today and then weigh yourself again in two weeks time.

Action-oriented — What actions will you take to achieve your goal? Will you get a gym membership (and use it)? Will you take up a new sport? Will you hire a personal trainer?

Realistic — If the goal you choose is not realistic, you will be setting yourself up for failure. Remember that when the task seems too challenging, you’ll likely have a hard time sticking to it.

Time — Set a deadline. By doing so, you’ll have an end in sight, which will make the mission that much more appealing.

Although resolutions are not for everyone, using the S.M.A.R.T goals method can help ensure you are one step closer in a successful direction.
