Blazing Paddles dragonboat team looking for new members

The Comox Valley Blazing Paddles women’s dragonboat team is looking for a few dedicated women of any age to join them on  their competitive team.

“We’re a group of positive people with an appetite for paddling, fun, and competition,” a team member said. “If you enjoy fitness and are able to commit to paddling twice a week as well as attending a few competitions a year then we are the team for you! We paddle Wednesdays from 4:30- 5:30 p.m. and Sundays 10-11 a.m.”

Dragonboat racing is one of the fastest growing water-sports in the world today, and yet it has been around for over 2,000 years. Dragonboat racing evolved from the original “Waking the Dragon” rituals celebrated by many Asian cultures.

Traditionally celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the first races were meant to awaken the hibernating dragon. The people needed to appease the spirit of the dragon, to avoid bad luck and to get the rains they needed to ensure a good crop for the year.
