The Vernon Blue Bombers racked up 200 yards rushing as they stopped the West Kelowna Dragons 12-6 in Atom football play Sunday at Grahame Park.

Ethan Mitchell led the way with 76 yards, while Tayber McLean had 58 yards and two touchdowns, Kolby Thorpe supplied 46 yards and Mekhi Mitchell added 25 yards.

The offensive line, led by Joey Mazzie, Liam Gombrich, Noah Vacqueray, Gibson Vacqueray, and Ryland Croswell did an excellent job blocking as did the back-ups.

Defensively, Mitchell recorded eight tackles and a sack, Thorpe had five tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and fumble recovery and Jared Cooper added three tackles.

Coach Guy McLean was happy with the victory and called it a “solid team effort, but we want to improve and get better for our home playoff game in two weeks.”

The Vernon Yellow Jackets blanked the West Kelowna Sun Devils 39-0 in Pee Wee action, moving to 8-0 with six shutouts.

“Our defence continues to shut down the opposition and give us good field position,” said head coach Brian Cragg. “We have some boys that can flow to the ball and make tackles which allows us to bottle up their offence.”

Isaiah Ondrik led all tacklers with four, while Isaac Lowe had an interception.

Ethan Anderson opened the Yellow Jacket attack with a one-yard QB sneak and Bryce Tkachuk followed it up with rushing TDs of 21 and 41 yards.

A touchback on a missed field goal attempt and a 40 yard TD run by Riley Macgillvray increased the Jackets’ lead to 33-0 after three quarters. Zack Smith hit a streaking Ondrik in the end zone for the final score.

The Jackets visit the 7-1 Kelowna Lions Sunday.

The Vernon Marauders lost 36-8 to the first-place West Kelowna Sun Devils in Junior Bantam play Sunday at Grahame Park.

Tyler (Ducky) Sova scored the only Marauder TD with a 49-yard, tackle-busting rush late in the third quarter behind the solid blocking of Tommy Bettcher, Kaiden Parton, Jackson Ponipal and Clayton Hamming.

Long snapper Isaac Olsen and kicker Sebastian Sanchez connected on the convert.

On defence, Morgan Nichols was the standout with 10 tackles and a pass interception, followed by Tyler Braun with six tackles and an interception. Zack Rogers, Reid (Pinball) Mackenzie, Tyler Riva and Miles Forrest were also solid on the D.

The Marauders meet the second-place Kelowna Lions Sunday (2 p.m.) at Parkinson East Field, adjacent to the Apple Bowl.

The Vernon Magnums fell 49-0 to the Coquitlam Falcons in B.C. Midget action Sunday at Grahame Park.

“Coquitlam dominated every aspect of the play with speed and desire,” said Magnum head coach Bill (Lumpy) Tarr.

“There were enough Magnum players that just plainly did not want to give an honest effort on the field against a top-ranked opponent today.”

Tarr said Magnum practices will be interesting to watch this week as Vernon prepares to host North Delta Sunday, 3 p.m., at Grahame.
