Oak Bay Lawn Bowling Club members braved a snowy New Year’s Day for local lawn bowlers’ version of a polar bear swim.
“Neither rain, sleet nor snow stopped 16 members of the club from participating in an outdoors New Year’s Day Tournament,” said the club’s Marcia Thorneycroft.
“With the temperature hovering around 3°C, teams played six ends, before their hands went numb, and they moved inside for tea.”
The fun and festive tourney isn’t the only action at the club this winter.
Indoor short mat bowling is also well under way at the club, Thorneycroft said, but added that members look forward to spring, and being able toplay outdoors daily under sunny skies.
Anyone who would like to give lawn bowling a try can watch for the club’s open house at the end of April.
The club also hosts free bowling Friday evenings from May through September for those age 12 and older to try the popular sport.
