The Nelson Boxing Club has a new home on Baker Street.
The club will take up residence next month in the space that formerly housed Summit Health and Fitness. After being asked to leave its former home, the club had planned to occupy the previous Nelson Animal Hospital site on Ymir Road.
That plan fell through, however, and the club has operated out of a church basement this summer as it searched for a better venue. Boxing club co-owner Jesse Pineiro said he was delighted to be offered the Summit gym at 685 Baker.
“It’s a good spot. It’s a really good space,” said Pineiro. “It’s huge. I’m only using part of it for boxing. …
“We can have a class for women. We can split up kids and adults, that’s great. We can do whatever we want. It’s our space. That flexibility is great. We can make it our own.”
The club is currently building a ring in the new gym, and Pineiro said he expects the space will open in early September. He’s also hoping to organize another hometown card in October following the successful Fight Night Fundraiser in May.
The space will also serve as a new home for Red Path Movement, a parkour group that had also been on the lookout a permanent resident. Pineiro added a dedicated place for weight lifting will also be available.
