Braves start playoffs tonight after power out cancels Game 1

Island League MVP Nick Guerra, Braves chomping at the bit to start playoffs

The Saanich Braves are ready to start the playoffs after a power outage postponed Game 1 on Wednesday.

Game 1 goes tonight, 6:30 p.m. at Pearkes arena as the Braves host the Kerry Park Islanders in Round 1 of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League playoffs. With the remainder or the playoffs already decided, the teams will have to make up the lost game sooner than later, likely squeezing it in on Monday (check saanichbraves.ca for updates).

The Braves enter the playoffs with the Island league regular season MVP and scoring leader Nick Guerra, who potted 48 goals and 33 assists in 45 games.

Braves coach Brad Cook was part of the league voting, and said it’s a testament that Guerra won the MVP as teams can’t vote on their own players. Guerra won the Jamie Benn MVP, as voted on, as well as the Andy Hebenton scoring trophy.

“The nice thing about the VIJHL awards are that they’re voted on by peers, so to be recognized by the rest of the league it’s pretty special,” Cook said. “I know Guerra would love nothing more than to cap it off with a very long playoff run here.”

Game 3 is Saturday and Game 4 Tuesday, both at 7:30 p.m. at Kerry Park Arena.
