The top-ranked Oak Bay Breakers are Island champions.

They handily defeated host Dover Bay 80-34 during the senior girls’ AAA basketball Island Championships last weekend in Nanaimo.

Provincial competition runs March 1 to 4 at Langley Events Centre.

Belmont secondary hosts the AAAA boys Island tournament that started yesterday (Feb. 23).

City league champion Oak Bay has a first-round bye and plays tonight (Friday) at 6 p.m. Their opponent will be the winner between Cowichan and the winner of a Feb. 22 challenge game between Spectrum and Claremont. The championship final is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday.

Two teams advance to provincials, March 8 to 11 in Langley. The champion gains an automatic berth, while the runner-up can be challenged by the third-place team if the two teams haven’t played in the tournament.
