The Ravensong Breakers swimming club kicked off the new year and tuned up for the Vancouver Island Region championships with its Red and Black club meet Jan. 6 at Ravensong Aquatic Centre.
Swimmers were divided into two teams, designated “Red” and “Black”, and swam for team points. All swimmers’ times counted toward the team total; competitors were not divided by age group or gender.
Team Red prevailed with 1,723 points, with Team Black following closely with 1,695. As an indication of how well the teams were divided, two teams from each squad competed in a 200-metre freestyle relay, and Red One edged Black One by just three-tenths of a second. Red Two followed another six-tenths of a second behind in third.
The team swam in the 2017 Vancouver Island Regionals in Comox Jan. 12-15. Look for a recap in Thursday’s Sports section.
