Breakers off to big meet in California

Ravensong Aquatic Club sends four swimmers to largest meet of its kind this week

Four members of the Ravensong Breakers swimming club travel this week to compete in the prestigious Far Western Championship meet July 27-31 in Concord, Calif.

Camryn Stannard, Jakob Brager, Jack Confortin and Megan Romkes will race in the meet, the largest of its kind in the world, according to Breakers coach John Campbell.

“These kids will get to see what real fast is,” Campbell said.

Breakers swimmers have showed off their own speed in a busy spring and summer of competition, starting with an appearance by Romkes in the Canadian Olympic Trials in April.

Earlier this month, Stannard swept eight gold medals in the 11-under division in the Provincial Age-Group Championships in Saanich and was the top point-scorer of the meet. Other medal-winners in the eight-member Breakers delegation to provincials included Janna Horton, who won three bronze medals; Alexander Gerasimov, with two bronze; and Brager, who claimed bronze in the 100-metre backstroke.

Stannard was also the team’s top medal-winner at the Vancouver Island Championships in June. The club’s 13-member team placed fourth overall in the meet, also held at Commonwealth Pool in Saanich.

In addition, the Breakers’ Ethan Stannard was selected for a spot on the Zone 6 (Vancouver Island) team at the B.C. Summer Games, contested last weekend in Abbotsford.

The club’s new season begins in September. To sign up for tryouts or for more information, visit www.racbreakers.ca.
