When Catharine Pendrel of Kamloops fell to the ground while competing at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, it looked like disaster for the Canadian cross-country mountain biker. The mishap relegated the three-time Olympian and Canadian medal hopeful to the back of the 29-woman field. But Pendrel got to work on the five km course, and through sheer determination crossed the finish line in to win the bronze medal in one hour, 31 minutes and 41 seconds to win the bronze medal. For Canada, the medal marked its 22nd of the games, It was the Maple Leaf’s first medal in the cross-country mountain biking since Marie-Hélène Prémont captured silver in the Athens Olympics in 2004.
