Bruins get win in sloppy start to season

The Ridge Meadows Bruins men’s rugby squad beat the Vancouver Rowing Club 34-20 at their home stadium at the Brockton Oval over the weekend.

It was the Bruins’ first game of the season after a few messy and frustrating weeks of cancellations due to wintry weather.

Try scorers were Reed Nelson, Julian Benvenuti, Damien Fong, Paul Stanfield and Connor Epp.

Play was sloppy and unorganized, said spokesman Paul Stanfield, something the club will attempt to address in the upcoming weeks.

The first half started slowly, with both teams making mistakes equally, but the Bruins were able to capitalize a lot more successfully, and to locate holes in the Rowers defence.

They are next scheduled to face Squamish on Saturday at Brockton Oval, but there is snow in the forecast.
