Bulkley Valley biathletes add to World Masters medal count

Callie Lancaster and Lea-Marie Bowes-Lyon combine with Squamish's Yvette Jackson for Relay bronze

Two Bulkley Valley biathletes added another medal today to their tally at the Winter World Masters Games.

Callie Lancaster and Lèa-Marie Bowes-Lyon won bronze in the Women’s 2 division 4.5km Relay event at Innsbruck, Austria this morning along with teammate Yvette Jackson from Squamish.

The team, dubbed Team Canada, Eh!, had a combined record of 4-4 in shooting and time of 57:41.2 to secure the third place finish just 17 seconds behind second place Slovakia-Russia. Lancaster went 2-1 with a time of 19:53.2, Bowes-Lyon was 2-2 at 19:15.2 and Jackson posted the best time of the trio at 18:32.9 shooting 0-1.

A Finnish team dominated the field by eight minutes with a time of 49:30.3 for the gold.

The bronze gives Lancaster a total of three medals, one gold and two bronzes while Bowes-Lyon will bring home three bronzes.

Lancaster won gold in the Women’s U45 6km Sprint on Thursday going 2-2 in shooting, but was fast enough at 21:25.3 to finish nearly half a minute ahead her closest competitor.

Meanwhile, teammate Lèa-Marie Bowes-Lyon took third in the Women’s U40 category. She was 1-4 with a time of 21:45.4, which was 2:51.8 off the pace of the winner Simona Elvy of Czech Republic.

Previously, in the 10km Individual race, held Tuesday, both women achieved bronze in their respective classes. Lancaster was 0-3-3-3 in shooting and finished in 37:20.4. Bowes-Lyon went 2-1-2-4 and had a time of 36:21.0

Lancaster and Bowes-Lyon combined in 2018 for a first and second finish at the Canadian nationals.

Jackson is also bringing three medals home to B.C., one of each colour. She took the gold in the U55 Women’s Sprint, silver in the 10km Individual to go along with her Relay bronze.
