Bulldogs add strength up front before big road trip

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs have gained a forward and a defenceman to their roster.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs have added two players to their roster: one forward and one defenceman.

The team has officially signed affiliate player Cole Slaney, a five-foot-10 blueliner who has played 10 games with the B.C. Hockey League team. Slaney had a record of 8-21-29 in 55 games with the Campbell River Storm of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League before playing in Port Alberni.

“Cole keeps a simple game,” Bulldogs’ head coach and general manager Kevin Willison said. “He does a lot of the little things correctly. He’s never out of position. He joins the rush well.

Forward Mackenzie Wight made his BCHL debut last weekend with the Bulldogs and has already made an immediate impact on the ice, Willison said. He comes to the team from the Western Hockey League Sattle Thunderbirds, where he played six games this season.

“He’s brought a lot of passion,” Willison said. “He led by example the way he played on the weekend. He’s a physical presence out there.”

After being named the Fortis BC Energy Player of the Game in Saturday’s 4-1 win against the Trail Smoke Eaters, Wight scored his first two BCHL goals during Sunday’s 5-4 double overtime loss to the Powell River Kings.

The Bulldogs also released forward Alexander Uryga.

The Bulldogs have a 22-man roster right now, but there is a roster deadline on Dec. 1 and Willison said the team is still thinking about making some moves before then.

The ’Dogs embark on seven consecutive games on the road.
