Buy-Low ladies topple Lions

Leah Mulvihill scored twice and Patti Hansen was solid in net as the Buy-Low Vixens shut down the Kamloops Valleyview Lions 3-0 in the women’s division 2 final of the Checkers Rec Hockey Tournament Sunday at Priest Valley Arena.

Derri-Anne Cooper also scored for the Vixens, who got two assists from Nichole Oakden. The Lions left the ice with three minutes left after each team was assessed a major penalty during a melee.

“We had amazing play by all the girls and strong goaltending by Patti Hansen,” said Oakden. “A huge thank you goes to our wonderful sponsor Buy-Low Foods.”

The Vixens earlier grounded the Armstrong Farmers 4-2 Friday afternoon at PV, getting goals from Bernie Dwan, Edeen Ramsey, Cooper and Mulvihill. Nat Daniels scored for the Farmers.

Veteran blueliner Christine Bosworth exploded with 3+2 as Buy-Low stuffed the RTS Rocket Stars 8-1 Saturday morning at PV. Mulvihill, with 2+1, Cooper, with 1+2, Vicky Taylor and Leigh-Ann Stewart completed the Vixens’ offence.

Taylor was forced to wear the Vixens’ team socks in Buy-Low’s next game – a 2-2 tie with Valleyview – because Bosworth pulled the hat trick to win a bet.

Bosworth and Mulvihill netted the Vixen goals in the draw at Wesbild Centre.

The Rocket Stars got five goals from Penny Brown in a 7-4 win over the Lumby Mayhem Saturday afternoon at Civic.

“We got a great effort from the entire team all weekend,” said Karen Benn of the Stars, who got several door prizes from Rellish Transport for their dinner and dance Saturday night at the Lodge, featuring The Goods.

Sarah Visser scored three times and Rhonda Johnstone fired a pair as the Farmers mauled the Mayhem 7-2 Saturday at Wesbild.

Nat Daniels recorded the hat trick and Kaillie Halifax bagged two goals as the Farmers brushed back the Kamloops Kahunas 7-5.

Nelson clipped Phoenix of Calgary 4-1 in the women’s division 1 final Sunday at PV. The 10 women’s teams were divided by a draw.
