Bulkley Valley Christian School hosted the Senior Boys A Volleyball Northwest Zone Championships last weekend, with six teams competing for two spots at the A Provincials in Kelowna. The third place team also earned a chance to play for a wild card spot.
After regular pool play, the top four teams competed in playoffs, including BVCS, Centennial Christian School from Terrace, Hazelton Secondary School and Ebenezer Canadian Reformed School. Bulkley Valley and Centennial both won their semifinals, moving on to the gold medal match.
In the bronze match, Ebenezer and Hazelton played a best of three format. ECRS won in two straight games, earning the chance to play MacKenzie for a wild card spot at the Provincials.
The gold medal match saw Centennial and the hosting team, BVCS, in a close match with a large and enthusiastic crowd of family and friends. The first two of the best of five went to Bulkley Valley, 25-18 and 25-19. Centennial rallied, and took the third 25-20. The next was a nail-biter, with BVCS finally winning the match and the gold medals with a fourth game score of 25-23.
Justin Steenhof from Bulkley Valley Christian School was named as the tournament MVP.
Both Centennial and Bulkley Valley earned spots at the Provincial tournament, which will be held from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 in Kelowna.
