Caledonia Secondary School’s girls’ soccer season has come to an end, with the team placing second in the zone finals in Terrace on May 11.

Three teams from the region competed in the zones with Caledonia and Smithers tying in the final game 0-0.

Following tie-breaking rules, Smithers was declared zone champion with a differential of four points as Caledonia had only scored three.

“Smithers has the right as the zone winner to attend the provincial tournament at the end of this month, I’m not sure if they’ve made that decision to attend,” says coach and principal Keith Axelson. “But for our high school team, that was the end of the season for us.”

He says the high school soccer season is only six weeks long but many of the older girls on the team play for the women’s soccer league and will be getting into their regular competitive leagues right after. The practices and tournaments were a great way to warm-up and get extra training in for them.

“It’s a good opportunity for them to get in some preseason shape for that [regular] soccer season. And to get them touching the ball [for] some preseason training,” says Axelson. “[It’s good] just to get the girls a chance to work on some of their conditioning.”

He adds it’s also a great way to get them to improve their teamwork on the field.

“Anytime you get a chance to play sports as a team, I think there are valuable lessons that you learned through that process with regards to teamwork, commitment, and having fun together as a group,” he says. “And representing your school is something that I think is really important.”
