Calgary keeper latest to join Heat women

Anna Fuchshuber comes to UBC Okanagan soccer program from Calgary Foothills U18

Calgary’s Anna Fuchshuber will bring her goalkeeping skills this fall to the UBC Okanagan Heat women’s soccer program.

The former Calgary Foothills Tier 1 U18 and women’s premier player with the Mustangs wanted to keep her educational and soccer paths close to home, while moving up to Canada West competition.

“I want to study at a Canadian university that has excellent academics and a solid soccer program where I can contribute to its success and growth,” said Fuchshuber.

Heat head coach Claire Paterson looks forward to working with the Heat’s latest addition in goal.

“I have had the opportunity to see Anna play and I was very impressed with how she commands the back line and sees the field,” said Paterson. “A high level athlete, she comes from a strong program and has experience at the provincial and (National Training Centre) level.”

The 5-foot-6 Fuchshuber will join a Heat cast that will embark on their second season in Canada West with a group that is very young.

With the graduation of Christine Tallon, the field is open for a new group of goalies to find playing time on the back end.

“She joins an excellent young crop of goalkeepers who we believe will push each other and compete for minutes,” Paterson continued. “Myself and assistant Kai (Tolpinrund) are very excited that Anna has decided to join our program this fall.”

The multi-sport athlete in Fuchshuber will bring a heavy dose of athleticism with her to the Okanagan. She recently won a bronze medal at the U18 women’s rugby national championships, in addition to her hours put in with her soccer teams.

Her love of athletics has also helped Anna with a course of study when she arrives on campus as she is enrolled in the Human Kinetics program at the Okanagan campus of UBC and plans to end with a career is sports, particularly a sports physiotherapist or possibly a personal trainer.
