The UBC Okanagan Heat has added another Calgary product to its arsenal for the 2015 Canada West women’s soccer season.
Sarah George, a 5-foot-4 midfielder with the Calgary Villains Soccer Club,
will join Claire Paterson’s squad next fall.
George will primarily look to fill the right outside flank for a young Heat squad that continues to develop towards its future in the CIS.
George admits that current Heat roster members Susan Traynor and Sarah Coghlin were influential in her decision to come to the Okanagan, the latter two having also come from Calgary and at various times been fellow competitors.
She also has previously been teammates with Sarah Histed, Justine Hesch, and Anna Fuchshuber, all of whom have also committed to playing university soccer with the Heat. George currently plays alongside Histed with the Villains in Calgary.
“I’m super excited to be able to play with all these talented girls and for us to become a team,” George said. “I think being committed to a CIS-level team is a great accomplishment that I am really excited to experience. Seeing the campus previously and hearing many great things not only about the (program but from an academic standpoint, I am enthralled to be coming to the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus.”
Paterson really locked her sights on George at the fall ID camp. “Sarah was a player we were interested in working with as she showed a lot of potential and a fantastic eagerness to work hard and get better,” the coach said of her latest addition. “A wylie winger, we are happy that [she] has decided to join our program.”
George understands the steepness of the transition to university life and CIS-level soccer, but is welcome to the challenge.
