Stephanie Welters graduated from the female midget fastball ranks about 11 years ago and a Sooke-based ladies team has been in the back of her mind ever since. She’s putting out the call to any local women who would be interested in going out for a spot on the Sooke Sirens.Stephanie and those whom have already expressed support are confident Sooke can put a good team into play but some quick decisions need to be made.A league awaits and a home diamond is tentatively lined up but the squad needs to declare its intentions no later than March 15. “We welcome all skill levels,” says Stephanie. “We are also looking for coaching help, specifically a head coach.”An opportunity for information and inspiration is dead ahead if you’re not quite ready to commit. It’s a March 5 meeting at Mulligans at 5:30 this Saturday.“We have about 40 people who have expressed an interest,” reported Welters. The team has no actual affiliation with the Sooke Minor Fastball Association, although the local group has shown support with the offer of equipment and the weekly use of diamond one at Fred Milne Park for home games.Bases, shovels, etc. will be made available if the team gets going.“That’s fantastically generous of them,” said Welters.Much interest had apparently been lined up last year but the declaration deadline was missed. Don’t let that happen this time.If interested, let them know by emailing:sookewomensfastball@gmail.com
