When they weren’t sending balls over the net, the Okanagan Spring Brewery Camels were getting stopped by RPM Auto keeper Marty Vincze Monday night at Marshall Field #1.
The Capri Insurance Men’s 45+ Soccer League teams appeared headed for a scoreless draw until the 70th minute when fiery winger Steve Milne connected.
Fun-loving winger John Davies stole the ball at misfield, dished it to striker John Orton, who fed Milne on the right flank. Vincze got his hand on the ball before it went top corner for a 1-0 Camel win.
Dave Dutcher recorded the shutout with a few solid stops. Iain Butler, Ken Kranenborg and Neil McPhee were solid on the Humpbacks’ defence.
Orton and fellow striker Gord Howard recorded several hard shots on net, while central midfielder Paul Morgan hit the parking lot with two or three offerings after dancing around a series of defenders.
In other A side action, Brandt’s Creek brushed back the Silver Stars 3-1 at Beasley Park in Lake Country.
Led by a strong defensive effort from the Brandt’s back line, the Pubbers’ Blair Gautschi opened the scoring, seizing on an errant ball in the middle of the park and cooly slotting it home.
The second half remained 1-0 until Keith Seager was upended, resulting in a penalty kick converted by Jonathan Fletcher.
The Stars responded with a rocket off the foot of David Howes. Seager rounded out the offence, burying a 25-yarder that dipped and bent, totally fooling Stars’ keeper Ted Lurkins.
North Country Appraisals Kickers began the second half of the season with a tight 1-0 victory over Sunshine Pools at Mission #12 Sports Field.
Doug Nicholas slotted home a rebound past keeper Chris Turbit in the opening minutes. Dudley Whapshire nearly made it 2-0 about 10 minutes later as he had a clear breakaway from centre but pushed his low shot just wide.
The shorthanded North Country side began to run out of gas and Sunshine carried most of the play for the remainder of the contest but were unable to beat Kickers’ keeper Dave Gadd.
In B side action, Turn-Key Controls Ogopogos grounded the Rented Mules 4-2 at Rutland #1.
Turn-Key jumped into an early 3-0 lead with Rick Danyluk pocketing his first goal of the season from a beautiful cross from Ruben Cerventes. Danyluk, who had numerous chances on big blasts in previous games, simply put the ball off his chiseled chest into the corner.
With a little burst of speed like his idol Lionel Messi, Bryan Schenker broke in with a couple of goals deking the keeper and gently finishing.
Schenker had two or three more thrills, hitting one post. He was rewarded with his at trick on a penalty kick after being tackled inside the 18. Schenker took the Burger King Man of the Match.
Al Ryder and Steve Wilson replied for the stubborn Mules. Ryder clicked on a soft kick back to the keeper which was intercepted, while Wilson nailed a penalty kick, after Pogo defender Shawn Weibe tangled legs with his opponent inside the box.
It was like old times for the Ogopogos as keeper Yogi Kongsdorf returned to his old squad in an emergency role and was solid.
Central defenders Volker Otto and Weibe enjoyed dream killer games, stoning the Mules several times inside the 18.
A diving header by Don Brown three minutes from time gave Brown Benefits a 4-3 victory over Penticton United in a heavyweight showdown at Parkinson #9.
