YMCA’s Camp Thunderbird will be holding a Westshore Community Day event on June 3, specifically geared towards Sooke and area residents.
Events throughout the day include: canoeing, archery, hiking, interpretive nature walks, orienteering, frisbee, golf, marshmallow roasting and rock climbing.
Tours of the facilities will also be available for those interested in learning more about Camp Thunderbird’s history and programs.
Snacks will be provided, but anyone intending to stay for the entire afternoon is advised to bring a packed lunch.
According to Peter Gibbs, summer camp program co-ordinator, similar events have been run in the past, but none focusing specifically on West Shore and Sooke residents.
“The Y is becoming more involved in the West Shore, so that’s why we started this event.”
Fundraising will also take place for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, a program run by the YMCA-YWCA Greater Victoria branch.
The Strong Kids fund is a subsidy program that helps supplement camp registration fees for kids who could not otherwise afford it.
According to Gibbs, 90 to 100 attend Camp Thunderbird each year with financial assistance from the fund.
Westshore Community Day is free, and will take place at Camp Thunderbird located at 5040 Glinz Lake Road, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
