Williams Lake’s Kayla Moleschi and Canada’s Women’s Rugby Sevens team will play for a bronze medal at the Olympics Monday afternoon.
Canada fell 17-5 versus the No. 1 ranked Australia Monday morning in the semifinal and will now face Great Britain later today.
The game will be a chance for Canada to redeem itself after they were defeated 22-0 by Great Britain in the round robin in a game where the Canadians felt they did not play their best rugby.
In Canada’s semifinal Australia applied pressure immediately and jumped out to a 7-0 lead early after also connecting with a conversion.
By half time, Canada trailed 12-0 after another try from the Australians.
With just under four minutes left to play in the second half Australia again picked up a try to take a 17-0 lead, before Canada began to mount some offensive pressure when Charity Williams picked up her first try of the Olympics as she touched down with 30 seconds left to cut the lead to 17-5.
The Canadian squad, who were visibly emotional following the game, will now play at 2:30 p.m. for a bronze medal. The game will be broadcast on TSN and at www.cbc.ca/Olympics.
