Canada’s hopes for a gold medal ended Saturday at the IIHF Ice Hockey Junior World Championships in Malmo, Sweden.
The Canadians gave up three unanswered goals as they fell 5-1 to Finland in semifinal play Saturday morning.
Vernon’s Curtis Lazar assisted on Canada’s lone goal, scored by Jonathan Drouin in the second period to make it 2-1.
Joni Nikko and Artturi Lehkonen opened the Fins’ account with goals two minutes apart early in the second period. Rasmus Ristolainen restored Finland’s two-goal cushion after Drouin’s snipe, and Teuvo Teravinen pocketed a pair to complete the offence.
Finland will face Sweden for gold, leaving Canada and Russia to tangle in the bronze-medal game. Both tilts go Sunday.
