Canada’s women’s rugby team takes on New Zealand in Pacific Four Series Finale

Edmonton’s Tyson Beukeboom will captain the team

Playing in front of a hostile crowd is no big deal for Sophie de Goede as Canada’s National Women’s Rugby Team faces the New Zealand Black Ferns in Aoteroa on Saturday, May 18.

“We used to have an away game almost every time,” De Goede said.

The Canadian team’s strength is in its forward pack, which allows its explosive backline to create space and score tries.

“I certainly think we’re not going to look to stray away from that,” De Goede said.

After beating Australia 33-14 in Sydney, Australia, the team moved into third place in the world rankings, but the team is hungry for more success.

“I think being third in the world helps give our union some credibility on a global stage. For our personal team, though, we want to keep going for number one.”

Tyson Beukeboom will captain the team, earn her 68th cap for Canada, and become the most-capped Canadian women’s rugby player.

“She’s definitely the type of player and person that you want on your team and not playing against. I’ve had to do it a couple of times, and it’s not fun,” Goede said.

The game against New Zealand will be played in Christchurch at Apollo Projects Stadium on May 18 at 9:35 p.m.
