Canadian silver for Kozak

Vernon’s Conner Kozak pocketed a silver medal as Team B.C. lost to Alberta by one stroke in the Inter-Provincial portion of the Canadian Junior Boys Golf Champonships.

Kozak, who went 72-75-83-80-310 at Morgan Creek in South Surrey, joined teammates Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows and Adam Svensson of Surrey on the podium.

Kwon won the tournament with scorching 16-under 272 after rounds of 71-65-67-69.

Svensson placed third at 284 with rounds of 71-73-69-71.

Kozak, who will play for the UBC Thunderbirds on a scholarship this fall, ended up tied for 58th in the field of 156.

Only the first two rounds counted in the inter-provincial competition.

The Seaton grad carded triple-bogey sevens on the fourth and ninth holes in Friday’s final 18. He also had a double-bogey seven on No. 7 to finish the nine at 44. He recovered with a 36 on the back.

Richard Jung of Toronto finished second, 11 strokes back of Kwon. Jung shot rounds of 71-69-71-72.

Riley Fleming of Airdrie led Alberta at even-par 288.

Next up for Kozak is the Canadian Amateur, Aug. 11-14, at the Elmhurst and Niakwa courses in Winnipeg.
