The Clements Centre and Sunfest Country Music Festival are teaming up to bring the Vancouver Canucks Alumni to the Island Savings Centre for a special fundraiser.
On Feb. 11, the Canucks Alumni team will take on a team of first responders made up of local RCMP members and firefighters.
The event is the brainchild of Clements Centre executive director Dominic Rockall.
“In Port Alberni, when I worked for a similar organization to the Clements Centre, we organized a ‘Guns n Hoses’ police versus firefighters charity game,” he explained. “That was in 2010. It was a great success and is still going on as an annual event. In Duncan, I wanted to do the same type of event and with the support of [Sunfest owner and former Canucks player] Greg Adams, we have taken it to the next level by bringing the Vancouver Canucks Alumni team to play a team of combined local RCMP and firefighters.”
The Clements Centre Society has been assisting children and youth with developmental needs and adults with developmental disabilities in the Cowichan Valley since 1957.
“As a government funded non-profit society it is critical for us to continually come up with new ideas for fundraising,” Rockall related. “This is the first time we have ever put on such an exciting fundraising event and we are hopeful that it will be a tremendous success.”
In addition to the hockey game itself, the evening will include an autograph session, an initiation hockey game at intermission, a Westjet ticket raffle, chuck-a-puck, 50/50 draw and other contests.
The Canucks alumni team will include defencemen Dave Babych and Jyrki Lumme, country music singer Aaron Pritchett, and actor Jackson Davies, best known as Constable Constable from The Beachcombers.
Advance tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids 6-12. Tickets will also be available at the door for $12 for adults and $7 for children.
Doors open at 5 p.m. on Feb. 11. The autograph session is at 5:15 and puck drop is at 7 p.m.
