The Castlegar high school golf team placed fifth in AA provincials last week.
Stanley Humphries Secondary School’s (SHSS) hosted 11 other B.C. teams at the Castlegar Golf Club for the 2017 BC School AA Championship last Tuesday and Wednesday, finishing fifth with a score of 648.
“They had a good day the second round. They had the second-best team score for the day, but they weren’t able to improve their position,” explained Colin Overennay, who was part of the parents’ committee for the event. “So they were fifth after the first day and then they finished fifth after the second.”
First place went to George Elliot Secondary School from Lake Country, who finished with a score of 636.
SHSS golfers also did well in the individual title.
Ely Overennay finished fourth with a final score of 147. The first day he shot 76 on the 72-par course and the second day he shot 71 — the low score for the day.
“We had a couple of guys who played OK the first day, but they really stepped it up the second day, and that was good,” said Colin Overennay, Ely’s dad.
Nic Jenner shot 82 on the first day and 76 on the second, tying for 13th place, and A.J. Roberts shot 93 on the first day and 87 on the second, tying for 34th.
The other two SHSS golfers, William Watt and Ty Moorey, placed 21st and 44th (in a tie) respectively.
Second place for the championship’s individual title went to Tristan Mandur from Shawnigan Lake, while Mary Parsons of St. Thomas More Collegiate in Burnaby and Jake Lane from Kwalikum Secondary School in Qualicum Beach tied for first.
In terms of hosting the provincials, Colin Overennay said everything went very smoothly. He credits two other members of the parents’ committee for the success of the event.
“John Jenner was the main organizer and he definitely deserves recognition because he put in a lot of time on his own,” said Overennay. “John Jenner and Andy Roberts — those two guys put in quite a bit of work.”
