The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack had a very successful weekend in the Canadian College Baseball Conference. The WolfPack wound up hosting the University of Calgary Dinos and the Vancouver Island Baseball Institute Mariners at Norbrock Stadium (April 27-29) after the Dinos field was made unplayable because of high winds.
The results saw the Pack take the Dinos twice and split with the Mariners.
On Sunday, (Apr 29), the WolfPack downed the Mariners 4-1. It was TRU’s 2nd win in six tries against the team from Nanaimo, BC this regular season.
Thompson Rivers scored two runs in the first inning and were up 3-0 until the top of the fifth when the Mariners got on the board. TRU added one more in their half of the fifth inning en route to their 14 th victory of the season in comparison to 10 defeats.
The WolfPack scored four runs on five hits and committed two errors while VIBI had a run on two hits and three errors.
Castlegar BC’s Travis Nevakshonoff (RHP) pitched the complete game for his third victory of the season. Nevakshonoff, who was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers is now 3 and 3 on the year. He pitched a two hitter, giving up a run, four walks and three strikeouts.
Cody Chartrand (RHP, Nanaimo, BC) took the loss. He pitched four innings giving up three hits, a walk, four strikeouts and two runs. Chartrand is 2 and 3 on the year.
Offensively, Thompson Rivers was led by Alex Condon (designated hitter, Victoria, BC). Condon hit his league leading eighth homer and went two for three with two runs scored. He also had a run batted in to give him 26, the most in the CCBC.
David Hole (first base, Vancouver, BC) was two for three as well. He has the best batting average in the CCBC at .413.
Third baseman Rob Morrison (Calgary, AB) was 0 for 3 with a run batted hi.
Right fielder Jimmy Semaschuk (Whitehorse, YT) was one for three.
For VIBI: designated hitter Connor Merilees (North Vancouver, BC) was one for three. Catcher Jeremy Harasymchuk (Edmonton, AB) was one for two with a run scored.
The WolfPack and VIBI will duke it out again next weekend (May 5-6) in the final weekend of the CCBC regular season. Both teams will travel to Kelowna to play the Okanagan College Coyotes as well.
The WolfPack will host the Canadian College Baseball Conference Championship tournament beginning May 10 th at Norbrock Stadium.
