Cat fight: Panthers on their last leg following third straight loss

Victoria Cougars have swept the VIJHL finals so far with three wins in a row, winning 3-0 on Friday

The Peninsula Panthers aren’t faring well in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League finals.

Up against the league-leading Victoria Cougars, the Panthers have dropped three games in a row in the best-of seven series.

Th Peninsula squad were shut out in a 3-0 tally last night, March 23, in front of a home crowd at Panorama Recreation Centre.

After a scoreless first period, Victoria put the first marker on the scoreboard with a goal on the powerplay a few minutes into the second period, courtesy of Ryan Chan.

Samuel Rice scored the second goal for the Cougars unassisted before the second period was up, and Steve Axford sealed the deal in the third period on the powerplay.

Peninsula spent most of the third period in the penalty box. Joe Densmore, Tyler Porteous, Brock Dodsworth, David Stephens, Josh Bloomenthal, Ryan Hunter and Trevor Yee each earned themselves 10 minutes in the box for game misconducts. The home team managed 13 penalties in the third. The visitors had just one.

The finals continue tonight, March 24 at Panorama Recreation Centre. Puck drops at 6:30 p.m. The Panthers will need to win tonight to stay in the race.
