Almost all season long, the Brookswood Bobcats were clutch with their outside shooting.
But the team went cold and it cost them at the B.C. senior girls AAA provincial basketball championships.
The Bobcats, ranked second going in, settled for fourth place after dropping their final two games at the tournament held at North Vancouver’s Capilano University.
Brookswood fell 71-64 to the South Kamloops Titans in Saturday’s bronze medal game.
The night before, they lost a 72-65 overtime heartbreaker to the Claremont Spartans, the same team which knocked them out of the quarter-finals at the previous year’s provincial tournament.
“We just didn’t shoot the ball well,” said coach Neil Brown.
The team played well in other facets of the game, but was done in by mistakes at inopportune times.
“Someone is going to make mistakes and it just happened to us,” he said.
This was especially true during the semifinals when Brookswood committed four turnovers in the final minute while up by two points.
Claremont tied the score with 13 seconds left and took control in overtime to win by seven.
“It is my job to get the team prepared and I just didn’t get that done,” Brown said.
The team struggled all tournament long with their shooting, especially at the free throw line where they went a combined 56-for-104 for 53.8 per cent.
They were also sub-par from the three-point line, connecting on just 27 of their 129 three-point attempts (21 per cent).
Brittney Church, who averaged 13.25 points per game, was named a second team all-star.
