Jaclyn Pauley played the apprentice role to perfection.
The 18-year-old from Brookswood, finished third last year at the B.C. high school track and field championships in the senior girls javelin, losing to her club teammates with the Langley Mustangs, Brittni Wolczyk and Teagan Rasche, respectively.
“It was a really big meet for me because we have been working for a long time towards this.
“I was kind of always in the shadow of two other teammates I had for a while,” Pauley explained.
“It was really tough (losing to them), but I always learned a lot of stuff from them.”
With both girls graduated and competing at the university level, Pauley’s throw of 41.54m won her the gold medal by more than one metre last week in Nanaimo.
The throw was also significantly farther than the 35.82m she launched the javelin in her Grade 11 year when she won bronze.
Pauley’s throw was a bit off her personal best of 42.8m but she will have time to top that mark as she readies for the club provincial championships in July with the Mustangs. She is also attempting to make Team BC for the Canadian Legion youth track and field championships.
Pauley is off to UBC in September on a track and field scholarship.
