Caufield Engraving defeated Kia Motors 3-2 in the first game of Vernon Cup Under 18 girls soccer action Saturday at Marshall Field #3.
Danielle Butler and Jessica Okert scored first-half goals and Kate Alexander scored the winner midway through the second half in a well-contested game.
Simi Sidhu and Jenelle Petersen answered for Kia, who shared their goalkeeping between Jenelle Petersen and birthday girl Paige Haberstock.
The Subway Sharks iced the Navy Seals 4-2 in a season-ending, first-place showdown in U14/15 girls action Saturday morning at Marshall #5.
The Sharks struck first when Latisha Baker ripped a long shot under the bar following a strong corner by Katie MacGillivray. The Sharks went up by two after Maddie Powls finished off a nice pass from Nikki Watson, who had made a long run through the Seals’ defence.
The Seals responded with a quick goal, and then tied the game just before the half with a nice 25-yard shot.
Rajvir Randhawa tucked a shot inside the post to take the lead back for the Sharks in the second half.
Brian Eso’s Sharks got an insurance goal when Watson worked a nice give-and-go with Nikala deBalinhard and then fed Karley Geefs for the finish. Nicole Skidmore and Geefs had strong games at centre back, and Sarah Orr worked hard in the midfield to help the fish.
In U14-15 Subway girls action Saturday at Marshall #3, the Tracker Jackers brushed back the Vanilla Ice 2-1.
Hana Ogasawara opened the scoring for the Trackers, but Vanilla evened the score just before the first half. The game appeared headed for a draw when Kierra Bootsma fed a perfect pass to Ogasawara for a breakaway goal.
Dayna Whibley, who is suffering from a pulled hamstring muscle, scored for the Ice. Ania Splawinski set up Whibley after a run up the wing and a beautiful cross. Solid in net was Darian Newman.
