The PacWest regular season is now more than half over, and the Columbia Bible College Bearcats men’s and women’s volleyball teams are still on the outside looking in to the playoff picture.
That trend continued on Friday and Saturday, as the teams dropped all four games to the Capilano Blues on home court.
The women battled hard on Friday, losing 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 20-25 and 25-21), with Jodi Enns and Rebecca Garner compiling 17 and 15 kills respectively. The Blues finished the sweep with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21 and 25-24) win on Saturday.
It was a similar story for the men, who lost 3-1 (25-18, 26-28, 25-17 and 25-17) on Friday and fell 3-0 (25-13, 25-14 and 25-15) on Saturday. Mark Goertzen and Thomas Anton of the Bearcats led the way with eight kills apiece on Friday, and Anton had a team-high six kills on Saturday.
The women’s record dropped to three wins and 11 losses after the weekend, and they sit two games out of the playoffs. The men remain winless in 14 games, and are five games back of the sixth and final playoff spot.
The teams return to action tonight (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday) when they welcome the Douglas College Royals at the CBC gym. Women’s games are at 6 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday, while the men hit the court at 8 p.m. on Friday and 7 p.m. on Saturday.
The Bearcats basketball teams are also seeking their first wins of the season, after the men’s and women’s teams lost games on home court to Douglas on Jan. 5 and Capilano on Saturday.
The men fell 86-57 to Douglas, while the women lost 83-30. Umbori Watson and Elijah Calhoun had a team-high 14 points for the men, with the women getting nine points from Mandy Van Delden and Makayla Starman.
The Bearcats men then lost 71-59 to Capilano on Saturday, while the women lost 85-45. Mitch Krahn scored 15 points for the men, while Van Delden added 16 points for the women.
In other Bearcats news, the basketball teams hit the road today for games against the Quest Kermodes today, and then the Langara Falcons tomorrow (Saturday).
The men are two games out of the playoffs, while the women sit one game out of postseason contention.
