Cedar Kings bow out in provincials

Mission lacrosse team goes 2-2 at year end event

The Mission Cedar Kings’ trip to the BC Senior C Provincials ended earlier than anticipated.

The club travelled to Burnaby for the three-day event, which saw the top teams from all across the province battle it out for the B.C. title.

Mission opened with an 11-8 win over the Coquitlam Cobras on Friday, marking the first time in team history that the Kings have scored a win over Coquitlam. They followed that up with a 13-4 loss to the Ladner Pioneers later that day.

Day two action on Saturday saw Mission fall 7-4 to Airdrie, but then beat a team made up of Lower Mainland players 8-4. The Cedar Kings’ 2-2 record wasn’t good enough to advance them to day three on Sunday, and their provincial title run ended.

The provincials saw Mission recruit Canadian lacrosse hall of famer Russ Heard and his son Ryan Heard, who both played huge offensive roles in the four games.

The Cedar Kings also called up Colton Wellburn and Ethan Ohlmann from junior and the duo played well, with Wllburn scoring two goals in his first game and Ohlmann also recording his first goal in senior competition.

Ladner ended up winning the tournament by defeating Airdrie in the final on Sunday.
