Changes mean riding takes a hit

What has been a great surprise though is how many kids, parents and entire families I see riding to school

It’s a pretty exciting time at my house these days. Rhyley started school this year and there have been some major changes to our morning routine, or should I say our lack of routine.

In the past we got up when we felt like it, well when Rhyley felt like it, and got ready at a casual pace, squeezed in a ride semi regularly and I often turned my commute into a 90 minute mountain bike ride before I started work.

With all the changes, and the new rules in place to get us to kindergarten on time, my riding mileage has taken a big hit this month.

What has been a great surprise though is how many kids, parents and entire families I see riding to school almost every morning. It’s inspiring to see how many people have actually figured this out and made it work for them.with bikes. Maybe this won’t be such a big change after all.

So after a couple of weeks and some adjustments at home we managed to tweak the routine, speed up the breakfast process and scheduled in riding our bikes to school a few times a week instead of driving. One day this week we even managed a 10 km detour before school.

Riding to school for Rhyley gives her something fun to look forward to and has her way more awake and alert for her Kindergarten teacher. For me it helps take the edge off the mornings and is already giving me some extra time with her having fun, opposed to just working through the chore of getting to school on time.

Once she’s in class I head home, switch bikes and continue onto the bike shop. So far its working out well for both of us.

Lets hope the nice weather lasts a while longer!
