Chapple takes qualifying wins

Vernon’s Brendan Chapple was 2-0 going into Saturday afternoon play in the Canada Winter Games boys qualifying playdowns at the Vernon Curling Club.

Chapple outlasted John MacDonald 9-7 and brushed off Steven Schafthuzien 9-1 in Friday draws. Chapple faced Tyler Tardi in Saturday’s 2 p.m. draw.

Chapple is supported by Erik Colwell, Devon Schmidt and Johnathan Schwartz in the 12-team tournament.

In the seven-team girls’ side, Vernon’s Clare Schmidt was leading Carly Connor of Prince George 8-3 after seven ends at press time Saturday at noon. She is coached by Jim Cotter.

Schmidt, who lost her opening two games, is backed by third Miranda Chapple and front-enders Jaelyn Cotter and Cassidt Schwaerzke.

The Games go Feb. 13-March 1 in Prince George.
