They registered to play 18 holes of golf and laugh as they told stories and jokes once relayed to them by the ever-popular George Chapman at the Spallumcheen Golf & Country Club.

A total of 140 signed up and many were turned away for the fifth annual Chappy Memorial Tournament Saturday.

“We played 13 holes in the pouring rain,” laughed tourney director Kyle Wiebe. “Chappy would have quit after half a hole and had some choice words for the people staying out there.”

Chapman, a longtime starter and unofficial greeter at Spall, died March 4, 2011 in Vernon. The fun-loving former haberdasher was 75.

A pair of foursomes in the best two out of four balls net event tied at 20-under 122 with Dyck and Gloria Regier and Brian and Karen Paul picking first off the huge prize table by retrogression.

Second place went to Al Janz, Murray Oakden, Jack Roper and Jim Clouston.

Brian and Patsy Osachoff combined with Jeff and Cheryl Parker to take third at 123 by countback over longtime Spall pro Al Pisch, his wife, Julie Pisch, and Gord and Barb Fox,

Wiebe, Brooks Jones, Brett Carlson and Dylan Gardner finished fifth.

“We had a retail price of $13,000 worth of prizes,” said Wiebe. “Everybody got a Chappy Fall Windup poker chip ball marker.”

n Glenn and Debbie Cross shot 73 to win the annual Husband & Wife Tournament Sunday at the Vernon Golf & Country Club.

Second low gross in the scotch crossover tourney went to Kirk and Gillian Andries, at 76.

Rich Fountain and Marilyn Vat were third at 77, followed by Kirk Loukanen and Cheri Studer with 78, Dan and Karen Valin at 79 and Kirk and Elizabeth Galbraith at 80.
